Birth Affirmations

Affirmations are phrases that hold power to them. Affirmations specific to labor and birth are typically phrases centered around inner strength, the beauty of birth, trusting the process…

a lot of people like writing affirmations on cards for birth so they can visibly see the affirmations but maybe just having a handful of affirmation in your head or in your partners head to repeat and remind of your strengths is sufficient for you.

I find that there is so much power in community care. 2 ways community can give to their loved ones bringing new life into this world can be to gift affirmation cards from their own birth or friends and family making affirmation cards for you at baby shower or Mother’s Blessing/ Birthing Blessing.

Affirmation cards are a wonderful way to stay grounded and connected to the birthing experience when it becomes very intense. Some people use affirmation cards to repeat audibly or in their head to get them through contractions/ waves. Partners find affirmation cards helpful because it gives them ideas of encouraging statements to share with the birthing person as they go through the depths of labor. They can be used hanging from string lights, used with sticky tack or push pins on the walls, or even just laid out around the birthing space for the birthing person to glance at.

Read through the affirmations until you find one that is meaningful to you.

  1. Ask yourself – what would it LOOK like if I embodied that affirmation?

  2. Ask yourself – what would it FEEL like if I embodied that affirmation?

  3. How would that experience impact my labor or birth?

  4. Once you find some that are most meaningful to you, write them down. You could write them on a single piece of paper and go through each phrase throughout labor and birth or you can write each phrase on an individual paper/ card. You could hang these up around the birth space on a wall or lay them out somewhere like an alter or just on the floor or table.

    1. How to find affirmation - There are many websites you can look through, here’s one with a lot. ** note that many affirmations are gendered.
