Hello, I’m Sarah LMSW, CD
I’m so glad you’re here!
Birth and postpartum are some of the most sacred and vulnerable times in someone’s life. If we work together I am bound to see you physically and emotionally naked and raw. It is important you feel safe and comfortable with the team you choose to support your birth. So here’s a bit about me:
My practice is rooted community care, antiracism, informed consent, and assisting you in tapping into your inner strength and power.
I believe the birth of a child, and rebirth of humans in the transition to becoming a parent, are sacred and beautiful experiences. Knowing birth is strenuous on the physical body as well as requiring an immense amount of mental strength - I bring in knowledge about regulating your central nervous system, focusing on mind-body connection of somatic experiencing, advocating for you in this vulnerable space, providing a container as you are pushed to your limits, and provide knowledge to help you make the best choices for yourself.
I am also passionate about the postpartum period to help families navigate the transitions of a new parental identity, preparing parent’s relationship for changes, caring for themselves, and setting up realistic expectations for what the future will bring.
You can catch me around Austin climbing rocks, caring for the 200+ pigs at Central Texas Pig Rescue, crocheting at Barton Springs, reading at West China Tea House, and traveling with my partner, Haley, and our 2 dogs, Norman and Elio.
Somatic practices in the birth space.
Somatic work is the practice of embodiment and fully experiencing all aspects of life in your body in a way that feels powerful, restorative, and true to yourself. There are times where the body doesn’t feel like a safe space to be, yet it is our own. Trauma is held in our body and we hold on tight to it. There is much work to be done in regards to releasing trauma and connecting with out mind and body. My practice focuses on not only the logistics of birth, informed consent, advocacy, and knowledge.. but also the innate wisdom our body has to create and birth life.
In general, when bodies experience fear, anxiety, and don’t feel safe, they tense up. Through somatic practices we learn how to fully feel and embrace this unique part of the human experience by trusting the body’s sensations. I love bringing in aspects of comforting touch, discussing specific sensations, and diving into past traumas or mental blocks that could impact the body and birthing process.
Often times we rely on our brain to create meaning and narratives to best understand our experience rather than settling into it and relying on our body to tell the story; Despite our brain using contextual information to create a narrative that is not always based in reality. In times of uncertainty and stress this false narrative can be the true blockage in our life preventing us to fully live. Our body's sensations are always true and real, our brain is what plays tricks on us. Practicing embodiment through somatic therapy can create a better mind-body connection to step into our body and experiences and OUT of the constant brain space that can sometimes stall labor, and limit the ways we experience life fully.
